Leap
Introduction:
Hi and welcome to Leap. In this puzzle game, you control a young boy going around trying to catch frogs in the countryside. That is something I did a lot in my childhood.
This was my first time participating in such a short game jam. The original idea was to have a cute and cozy puzzle game, but I clearly didn't budget the game properly, and it ended up being more a concept than anything.
Still, I hope my little game can bring you a couple of minutes of fun and a smile.
Instructions:
- You control the boy. Click on a nearby cell to move the boy. You can only move on green cells.
- The objective is to catch the frog by sneaking up on it.
- If a frog sees you, it flees and if the frog reaches the water, you lose and the level restarts.
- Fireflies can attract the attention of frogs. They can be pushed around by moving into them.
- On certain levels, you can place a lantern. Just drag it from your UI to the cell you want to place it. Lanterns attract the attention of frogs and can be used to distract them. Click on the lantern after placing it to switch it on/off.
Problems:
- The biggest problem is the frog facing direction. Right now, there is no indication to show the player in which direction a frog is facing. That can cause confusion. Particularly if the frog is looking up/down.
- I panicked at the last minute and commented a piece of code responsible for clearing out objects from map to map. That means lanterns aren't cleared properly once placed.
- The "retry" button isn't working as it should, for the reason above.
Assets:
I'm not very good at art, as I imagine it is easy to see. As such, I used some pre-made assets:
- Toxic Frogs by Eduardo Scarpato.
- Lantern Pack by Karsiori
- The Boy by pzUH
This game was created for the 42nd Micro Jam with the themes "Frogs" and "Mouse Only". The development tools, like the stage editor, were created with the help of #bezi.
